I love good table conversation! As a family, we love coming up with new questions beyond our “highs and lows of the day." When dining with friends I also love coming up with questions to add depth to dinner conversation. Surface talk isn’t what builds relationships after all.
Meaningful conversation = meaningful relationships
On my 40th birthday, our family was out to dinner with another family and I was asked by a friend to name the highlights of each of the 4 decades I’ve lived. The best from age 0-10, 10-20 etc. I was, of course, unprepared, which made it fun, and random. I just talked about what came to mind first. It opened up conversation in all of us about the best and worst highlights in our lives. The things that shaped us. Isn’t this a great way to hear the story of someone’s life? My 11-year-old daughter was sitting next to me and she was glued to my every word and told me later that she was going to write it all down. I’m thankful for my friend’s question that made this special evening that much more memorable.
Here are a few of my favorite conversation starters to use on your next evening out… beyond the “what are you reading, watching, listening to” conversation:
Name the 5 most influential people in your life (beyond your immediate family).
Fill in the blank: If I wouldn’t/would have _____________, my life would have gone in a very different direction.
Say three things about yourself (2 true and one false) and others guess which is false.
Tell me something that’s exciting you lately.
If you could listen to any band live tonight, who would it be?
What was your very first job?
Name your celebrity crush.
I listed these from heavy to light. I think it’s so important to know your audience. For the introvert, just hearing the word “let’s go around the table…” could be terrifying. If I was sitting with my husband’s business colleagues I’d be sure to keep it to a one question answer which could easily lead to a more in-depth conversation for those who like to talk. The first few questions listed above could be a fun way to get to know even your closest friends better.
Do you have any favorite questions you like to ask? Or maybe you can share the best conversation starter you’ve heard?
